Cone Filters
I hope none of you guys are using a cone filter.
The original 944 setup went out of it's way to seek cold air, and a cone in the engine compartment is just sucking hot air. Hot air just makes the charge less dense, and that produces less power, go figure. Yet I've seen some 944 owners proudly displaying $400 setups at the PCA events, and all I can do is laugh (to myself) In addition, the filter medium is highly suspect. http://forums1.roadfly.org/porsche/forums/924-944-968/4959457-1.html And since I don't have a clue about what I'm talking about, LOL, take a look at the Jim Pasha article I posted too. Regards, P |
HOLY CRAP..... :P Havent seen you in a while.........
Tell us something about your 928 or some hobbies............. Do you post anything else besides the cone filter conspiracy??? Amazing? Either way nice to see you.......... :D |
porsche obviously went with this conspiracy too, (to seek hot air)
i have a 89 with a 2.7 and my airbox sucks air from behind the headlight, not the duct going under the fender, my fender duct is plugged with a factory piece. maybe they had learned from somthing to change the intake. low pressure area under the fender? water kicked up from the tire sucked in? so just to play devil's advocate, the cone filter is using the factory's most recent idea. derek ,,, (but i would stick with stock) |
Several years ago I installed a thermocouple right at my cone air filter that is located right behind the headlight bucket. Actually I moved it around the cone filter to get several measurements. When the car is moving, there is only about a 2-3 degree temperature difference between that location and the outside air. When the car is stopped, the temperature rises considerably. But as soon as you hit about 15 mph, the temperature drops back to the 2-3 degree level.
I was concerned about this too until I measured it. |

I don't believe the guy claiming 29% leakdown after one race because of a K&N filter.
You could run with no filter at all and have less wear than that. |
Sorry, but I don't buy it. K&N IS the best in the air intake industry. I know guys that don't run an air filter at the track and I'm sure that they aren't showing that much wear by the end of the SEASON (I'm assuming anyways, they run the same engine from one season to the next). SO, judging by what I just said, this guy is claiming that a K&N air filter will ruin your engine FASTER than it would if there was no filter. Besides that, this is the first guy I've heard complain about K&N filters. AND to top it all off he doesn't even sign it with his full name, how am I supposed to know that he even is related to the automotive industry any more than that one shoddy tech article.
O yeah, and 10 points for spelling TEAM right and correct punctuation:rolleyes: |
i've been running a K&N air filter on my 944 for four years. don't know about any performance increase, but it still runs fine.

Sorry but I got to disagree with you. Apex'i is the BEST in the market. Now, K&N is nothing to be dismissed as crap...it's performance is obviously not easily surpassed, considering it took 50 years for another manufacturer to improve the design. http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/index.html ~or, if you can read japanese, much better descriptions~ http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/1/index.html I will be using either the Apexi or a K&N filter, but it will be in an insulated box fed by ambient air. The only people who use open element filters in a high-heat area (not sure exactly where all the high heat areas are yet in the 944 bay) are people who drive carpet queens or ricers. |
Mak, you're point on Apexi being the best could be argued. K&N has one big thing up on Apexi, the range of cars the intake systems are made for. Apexi tends to lean more towards the japanese cars, whereas K&N makes intakes for FI domestics, carburated domestics, euros, AND the japanese market. Allow me to demonstrate my point...
Say I had a 95 Camaro Z28. I'm pretty sure that Apexi doesn't make anything for that car (I could be wrong, I did not check to see if they do make anything for this car, but I HIGHLY doubt they do). SO for my application Apexi's superior prodect to K&N does me know good. NOTE-I'm not arguing that Apexi makes a better intake per application than K&N (you're links proved that to be true), I'm just saying that K&N COULD be viewed as the best by some people due to the fact that they make intakes for WAY more applications. That and I feel like argueing. |
actually, K&N makes air filters to fit virtually EVERYTHING. their product list is enormous. it is possible to buy them in nearly any shape, size, length, etc. i have a 77 triumph bonneville 750 that i am customizing and i was able to find a K&N that fit the twin carburretors and over 3 inch long velocity stacks.

you're right, Apex'i only makes drop-ins for select few cars, most are Japanese and a few american and european cars. They DO make a number of universal filters to fit some carbed applications, but they generally stick to cone filters (which is what this thread is about)...and a cone filter can be fitted to anything round, or an adapter bought to fit it.
But, yeah, in the "possible applications" department, K&N wins hands down. ~also~ Apex'i makes an adapter (or a generic adapter can be bought off ebay) to fit a 3" cone to the '95 Z28. American muscle cars, especially the mid/late 80's models, are BIG in Japan...they apparently make amazing drift and GT cars. But if I wanted to bolt something on my '85 ford escort 1.6l, I'm just **** out of luck...lol. |

Well, I was talkign about drop-ins or easily adapted filters...but yeah...especially the late 80's and early 90's Camaros are a serious hit but any americanized magazine considers them "almost taboo" to cover. There's a few vids up of them, I'll try to find some links for you...
Old muscle cars are also extremely popular but for the same reason they are here. |
Hey P, will it never end? ENOUGH!!! I don't run a cone filter but if I ever decide to, it's MY business. And if any of the other folks out there want to use a K&N or any other gauze filter or no filter at all, it's THEIR business. Give it the hell up.

And nobody there uses old muscle cars for drag racing, they just aren't fast enough. Most the drag racing that happens over there is a 0-300 kph (~180 mph) and muscle cars don't go that fast. Besides that, muscle cars don't come out of the hole compared to what they havel, so they are considered worthless. |
wow, i'm really surprised!! quite a large posting, and no-one seems to want to DYNO!! HA HA.
|
Hey, way to thread jack guys. Why don't you start a thread of your own to debate this? I was originally trying to laugh at ..P and now I'm reading post upon post of drifting-jap-gt blah blah ****.
Keep it on topic. |

I love it when people make posts like this...because they have no possible connection to the topic at hand...they're random. This thread stayed on topic, just because the topic was somewhat broadened doesn't mean anything bad happened.:P Your post, and this one, are the only ones "off-topic"...but I'm a troll anyways so I'm exempt. |
