Flickering ! light in gauge cluster

I drove my 944 to a softball tournament this week-end to a town about 40 miles away one way. On the way down there and way back i noticed the little red ! light flickering. Sometimes it would stay on for a couple of seconds the go off. Since i don't have an owner's manual i was wondering what this light is and why it would just flicker. It doesn't do it in town just on the highway at about 70 mph or 90 or higher.

Thanks in advance for your help.

He's talking about the exclamation point light, at the top of the guage cluster(on 85.5+ cars)

Maybe your parking brake lever is loose and is moving up and down when you go over bumps and such?

Name kinda gave it away. Amarillo sounds better. The light is right above the turn signal i believe very top of gauge cluster. Go Demons and Greyhounds!

hahahah....the greyhounds have sucked for a decade...well, at football, anyways...

Yeah...I thought that was the light but didn't know. It's the general warning light...like the "check engine" light. Can we pull codes on our cars? I would check all sensor connections. What's your other guages do?

Everything did work until recently my mpg needle seems to have quit or is stuck. All the rest of the gauges are working fine.

dash light

When that big exclamation point light comes on another littler light on the dash comes on as well. Next time it blinks look for some word in red to appear.

Ok, here's the update. this light now stays on all the time. So i looked for another light or word like WaA420 suggested and sure enough the little red light at the bottom of the oil pressure gauge was on. I shut the motor off let it sit for a while the checked the oil which was fine. Any ideas? Adidas sorry i hadn't replied, i was thinking of selling my car but i think i'm going to keep it so i might need them after all. Thanks

Is this a low pressure or low oil level or what other function does this light have? Oil level seems to be fine. There is also a rattle when i rev up the engine in Park as if there was something loose or something.

Get ready to buy a new engine!

That sound is the rattlesnake in your crankcase that is getting ready to bite... (i.e. rod bearings!)

In the late cars as far as I recall the ! will flicker for a few reasons...

- emergency brake connection loose.....
- brake fluid level low (or connection at the wires loose)

but since you mention that the oil pressure light is on as well...

If the oil pressure guage light is red as well (guage below 1 bar)........ like 944ecology mentioned you are having oil pressure problems and this is no good. It could be broken pick up tube, loose crank bolt, rod bearings, oil pump etc......

P.S no engine codes generated by dme for you to pull on these cars...

Wouldn't the needle stay at the bottom if i was not getting any pressure. It reads about 5 and goes down to about 3.5 as it warms up. Anyone want a 944 auto for about $2500?

??? you also mentioned the little red light turned on ..........ON the oil pressure guage? it will only turn on if its dips below 1 bar... so is that light on or not when it is running.....

5 to 3.5 is normal.

If the light on the guage is off.......check the 2 other items I mentioned..........

The ! light is on and the light on the oil gauge is on BUT the needle still reads 5 to 3.5 like i mentioned. Any chance the sensor is bad?

do you have a mechanical pressure gauge? if so then hook it up and see. otherwise I would probably gamble that the sender is bad and replace it and see what happens. Yes the light and the gauge are driven off two different connections on the sender.
