Question Me and my stupid dad. Clutch replacement woes.

OK, so we were just moving right along with the clutch job and we didn't follow the steps for just a second. End result. I said I wanted to re-build my slave cylinder so my dad took it off. Problem is the next step in the instructions is

-Block (wedge) clutch pedal down. You need to do this to disengage the clutch so that you can turn the drive-shaft by hand at the transmission, thus postioning its clamping sleeve for removal. A short piece of lumber can be wedged between the pedal and the front edge of the driver's seat to accomplish this.
Remove large protective cover (rubber trapezoidal plug) on the transmission bellhousing, exposing clamping sleeve.

-Turn the driveshaft by hand by reaching into where the cover was. Turn it to expose first one, then the other allen-head bolt in the clamping sleeve. Loosen the clamping sleeve by completely removing the two allen bolts: 8 mm allen with extension.
Mark position of clamping sleeve, slide toward transmission. Tap lightly if stuck.

HOW CAN I DO THIS WITHOUT THE SLAVE CYLINDER? It is sitting on a shelf and the fluid is all drained out. HELP!!!!

I just tried that and I don't understand why but it didn't work. I tried it in gear and it didn't turn. Then in neutral and quite obviosly it also didn't turn. I felt stupid to have not tried that and now am even more confused cause it didn't work.

Take out the plugs so you aren't turning against compression too.

Don't call your dad stupid, a lot of dad's wouldn't find the time to help you. When you get frustrated during car repair, leave it alone till you clam down. Don't tranfer your frustration to your pops...good luck stay with it..

Peace

Hey hey hey. I very rarely get the chance to balme my dad for anything. This time it WAS him. I was working on the last of the exhaust shields and he took off the starter. Then, without checking the next step on the instructions he figured the slave needed to come off eventualy and seeing as he was right there . . .

This was after I had already warned him that you guys had warned my to go one step at a time.

No worries though. I am vry gratefull for his help. We are having a great time. Not very stressed as I have another car and I told myself it would take a month. Not even close to that yet.

Just have to get back to that step and turn that damn driveshaft.

'Stupid Me and my Dad"

That ought to do it.

Seriously, though...My Dad has been gone a LONG time, but I still miss him. Enjoy your time with your dad..they have a tendency to "disappear" when you least expect it. Much of what I know about mechanics I learned at an early age by crawling under the family Chevy (or Ford, depending on the year)

You're lucky your dad will still work on your car with you. I don't get that luxury anymore.

my dad has been gone since 2000. He always says I should be doing better things with my money than working on these 'buckets'. Hey Im livin my single life with TWO cars and enjoying yet (yeah i dont have a girl..thats how i manage ). I learned some stuff from him, but compared to what I used to know....Ive done leaps and bounds. I could barely change my own oil and plugs, and didnt even have a sense of how things worked. After learning a lot on my own and being a mechanic since 2000, I find myself doing the simple things easily, and taking on much bigger projects on my own (building motors, clutches etc)

Mom on the other hand seems to be much more supportive....she doesnt mind what I do, as long as the bills and the yardwork come first...

If the rear tires are off the ground, just turn the crank bolt. It won't matter if your in gear or not.

If the rear tires are on the ground it will need to be in neutral.

Either way, if you turn the crank bolt the driveshaft will turn.

Why not just ask your "stupid dad" to use a screw driver to push the clutch release arm in while you turn the torque shaft?

I ended up just turning the crankshaft. I later realized that a prybar in the side hole next to the slave cyl. hole will be able to pry the lever and release the clutch. My dad and you guys proved to be very helpfull in the project. Thanks.
