Bosch Cap and Rotor

What do you guys think I should do. My 944 is due for a tune up it has the factory Cap and rotor on it still after 96k. THe bosch parts are $$$. My question is should I pay the price to stick with Bosch or go to like a napa or autozone for them?

I just bought and installed NAPA's (Echlin brand) Dist. cap. Cost $59.02, Rotor cost $11.89. I didn't have time to shop around. They seem to work just fine for my '83. Time will tell, I suppose.

Go with bosch, it costs more, but do a search for what happened to me when the PO put cheapie NAPA stuff on there. Catastrophic rotor failure, sucked baad. I took pictures... basically the rotor melted and tore the hell out of the cap also. Way better to get the bosch...

when you get the bosch, compare them with the quality of the napa... the bosch one feels solid, the napa one seemed flimsy and like crap.

Don't go cheap... you'll always regret it.

I bought the Bosch cap and rotor form Zims in a package deal for $59 total for both. This was back in April.

One thing you have to be aware of is some places won't sell you just the rotor, they sell the rotor and shaft together. The reason is the factory rotor has some sort of glue applied between the rotor and shaft and it takes some persuasion to get the old rotor off. My rotor looked like the dog had been chewing on it by the time I got it off.

okay, maybe my memory is shot and i did pay more than $60... but still!

When I replaced my rotor, it was so brittle that it literally fell apart in my hands

Well, Paragon Products has the Bosch cap for $ 38.40, and the rotor (no shaft) for $ 42.11. Next time I need them, I'll most likely be calling Chuck or Jason for them anyway. But then again......maybe I'll try Zim's.

I just needed the parts in a hurry, in a spur of the moment type thing. I've had very good luck with Echlin parts from Napa in the past, as far as for other cars. This Echlin brand isn't the "cheapie" stuff you'll find at a lot of FLAPS.

I've heard stories of people having the rotor set screw back out, rotor come loose and raise havoc inside cap. Thats why a lot of people put a dab of loctite on that set screw (I didn't though). But haven't ever heard of one "melting" down........it must have been a real cheapie one. That, or it was the setscrew problem that caused it. If that was the case, it wouldn't have mattered what brand of parts it was. I don't know, time will tell with this one I used (I think I'll keep an eye on it though).

NAPA is real hit or miss with their product quality offerings. Usually not the best. I buy some commercial stuff from one of their sister companies and NAPA usually doesn't get (or want) much access to that stuff.

If you didn't Loctite the set screw I'd pull the cap off and do it. Remember Porsche not only loctites the set screw but also the shaft to boot. Having the rotor spin free is a real risk when that screw backs out.

Thanks IceShark. I'll have to take a better looky-peeky into this!
