Strange results...

Ok, had to replace the timing belt on my '87na today. I decided to take a very respected Porsche mechanic's advice, and not put the balance shaft belt back on. His advice was to try it, and if it vibrates, put it back on. He assured me I probably would not notice it gone except for the motor will rev a little easier. He did emphasize "little" meaning I may or may not notice it by the SOP dyno (seat of pants).

The only other thing I did was to remove the K&N cone filter and put the air box back on with a stock paper filter installed.

Took it out for a ride and I can not figure this out. The car felt like I picked up 15 more HP. Ok, I race my car alot (auto-x and hill climb), and I have been a mechanic most of my life. So I know that those two "changes" should not have increased the power output like that. The car has a FR Wilk chip, headers and a high flow cat.

Was that stupid cone filter robbing that much HP?

Or was the FR Wilk chip designed in a way that it really benefitted from the stock airbox and the headers so the "package" just became "optimized"?

Oh yeah, the mechanic was right. I noticed NO new vibrations at any rpm's. And I was really sensitive to it looking for vibs.
