the god forsaken heat

My 83 is blowing hot air out of the vents at all times. Even when I turn the blower off a good deal still comes out. I can't live like this it is terriable.

The ac does not work but at least I should be able to not have hot air blowing!!

PS how much would it be to get the AC converted and working?

Your heater valve thingy at the back of the firewall is stuck Bula.

Don't flip out yet.

I think the part is really cheap and most of the time not even broken..just needs a little convincing to start working again.....

....Anyone remember the name of that thing so he can do a proper search?

Here is the part on the inside

The part on the outside is between the back of the camhousing (part that says porsche and the firewall) ... Hint...there is a heater hose sticking to it.

The reason he asked you if the heat is on is because many, many of us don't know how to operate the early slide guages. My car came without a manual and it was like trying for figure out a Hyku.

(even with the manual it is still cryptic)

A/c..could cost you nearly $1000 including labor / parts...all said and done if it has been inoperative for an extended time (leaks let air/moisture in as well as freon out. causes stuff to corrode)

Hard to do yourself because of the special tools/guages/dryers that need to be used to do it right.

well, your 83 should be like my early 85...

To convert to 134 from R12, I did it the cheap and easy way. First off, there was NO R12 in the system to evacuate.
I went down to the local store and bought a $35 kit that had fittings and 3 bottles with a gauge hose. I actually didn't use the fittings.
On the early 944's the low side (suction) is at the compressor ( viewed from drivers side wheelwell. I got a 90 degree R12 to R134 fitting from NAPA ( not sure of the #, but it's in their system). This fitting will not fit due to the compressor location, so you ALSO have to get a shorter belt NAPA part # NBH25050390 . This belt allows the compressor to be lower, so that the connector doesn't hit the bracket.
Note: when putting on the belt, you must loosen all the way to get it on. Attach the connector before tensioning the belt fully.
Then just hook up fresh cans of R134 and your good to go...
I have had to top off a couple times, but it seems like the system is sealing itself from being dry for so long.

I know that this goes against the grain of the " Right Way ", but it worked, and it was cheap.

Hope that helps

Don

(edit)
$35 - 134 conversion kit
$10-$15 - 90 degree fitting
$15 (approx) compressor drive belt

(vs)

$1000 conversion.

So, If the system craps out in a year or two, oh well.

Hey, don't get me wrong...that may be worth a try but freon should never just 'disappear'. Moisture in an ac system can be the quick death of it....but I am chiming in from florida (rarely ever below 70%).

Do you know if your compressor works?

If you turn the a/c fan dial to the lowest speed, a servo will close the flapper door to the heat box as well. Outside of that and getting the a/c charged, you can move the top sliders to the center and shut the vents.

Another way to go although a lot more $$$ is the whole shibang...944Online.com A/C conversion kit runs about $490 but includes: new compressor, fittings, hardware, a/c drier, etc...give it a look

I think when they go they go. It will either not come on at all or sound/feel really horrible when you spin the pully, or, no cooling when your freon is full.....

Clarks-garage.com now has an ac troubleshooting chart.

Only way to know is to hook up a gauge manifold and read low and high side pressure with clutch engaged and compressor running.

low side about 40 psi
high side about 200 psi
low side and high side the same means compressor toast.

well the A/C in my car was a hack job to say the least. The condenser in the front is all corroded, and he fixed the lines by putting rubber hose and clamps! . Im not going to dare turn the a/c on. That is going to be one of the bigger projects next spring. Im going to order all new hard lines, and get the a/c conversion kit off ebay, so everything is brand spankin new. That gets fixed once the paint job and nose damage in the front gets fixed.
