924s DME

Good day porsche guru's,
I have recently purchased an '87 NA 924s. Having a few electrical problems such as non-working tach, A/C problems, cooling fans not turning on normally, etc. There has been a bit of re-wiring from the previous owner to bypass the DME. I have suspected a DME problem and when I was looking at the part number for replacement, I found that my DME part number is 944.618.111.01 whcih looks to be a DME for a pre-85 944. I believe I should have a 944.618.121.04. Is this correct? What is the cahnce that this 924s has had the engine replaced with a older 944 engine? Any way of checking the number on the engine or finding out by differences in te engines?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Shane

So I should not have a problem running this DME? Any chance these problems I'm having are related to a bad DME? Mainly I would like to get my tach working for now. Do you know the schematic layout for the DME? I would really like to know what pins are input/output for various devices. I have the 924/944 microfiche but it doe not have any better schematics than a Haynes manual. Looks like the tach output may be coming from Pin 1 of the DME, how can I test the output to the tach from the DME?
A note on "chipping" the DME. Maybe we can go offline for this but what are the benefits and drawbacks to chipping? Like anyone else, I would like to get a bit more power/torque out of this vehicle. One of the guys at the office owns a 350z and is trying to get me to race with him at the local SC association track.

I don't have a doubt that the 350z will smoke my 924S. He was just asking if I would like to join in on the fun. He probably wants to beat my Porsche because he says there is a 944 Turbo that he can not seem to beat. It is set up for the track and runs track tires. The 350z is a track model but running stock tires. I think they race against time and not head to head.

Now what is the chance that the whole engine has been replaced with an older 944 engine? Any way to check this? Is there an engine number to look at? Also this car has been switched over to manual rack and pinion steering with all the power steering removed.
