a compliment... I think.

"Eights and sixes generally sound good, while 12s are the purist's pinnacle of aural delight. I have never heard a REALLY sweet-sounding four-cylinder, though the Porsche 944/968 came close." - Peter Dron, evo 072

944's sound better than some rice with a chrome coffee can hanging out back.

Last week my friend drove my car, and he still didn't believe it was a four cylinder...He actually said it felt quicker and more responsive than his Prelude. I'll have to take the Prelude for a spin sometime and decide for myself.

As for sound, the 944 sounds great at higher RPM, but is a little lacking at idle. Now an American V-8 sounds great at idle i.e. older Corvettes and Mustangs.

well I would imagine your car is faster than your boys prelude. 1 because even the big 2.2L motor in a prelude doesnt make all that much torque..maybe 150 at most?. And it relies on VTEC to make the hp. 2 is that you have another .3L of displacement, and a VERY torquey motor. I like how Porsche engines are designed...I can upshift early and just keep my foot in it and the torque just pulls me away. Which is one of the reasons my car doesnt see over 5500 rpm...the car feels like it runs out of breath beyond that (it has a stock airbox and a dirty filter so who knows).

My boss said my car sounds quite nice for a 4 cylinder. nice deep tone to it, and my honda friend says it sounds crazy better than a honda..

Nothing sounds as good as a V-8. It just screams American!

As an aside, the 944 sounds a lot "meaner" - the engine note just screams - with the FR Wilk chip. I have no way of explaining it, that's just the way it is.

I will have to agree. I just bought a 1985.5 944 and had the head re-done, dropped in a new cam, changed the air intake, put in a big bore throttle body, changed the chip, throttle response cam, racing headers, removed the cat, and put on a Borla XR-1 Racing "muffler" (if you want to call it a muffler :-P) The car sounds CRAZY awesome!!! Not to mention it can be heard from about 5 miles away. I did notice at first there were a few resonant frequencies in there because of old heat shielding (which I promptly removed) and now the car sounds almost as good as my fathers 1999 911 C4 :-P BTW you can check out my project (and others) at: Rides

I have to say, I've driven my dad's 81 'vette quite a few times, and that is the best sounding engine I have personally driven. It has that low RPM deep sound and a great growl at high RPM...

there are alot of good sounding cars in diffrent catagories. I love the sound of my dads 67 Austin Healy, it screams british sports car. Then again for pure brute the 67 Corvette 427 with side pipes sounds MEAN. But how can you argue a 12cyl. Ferrari at full tilt.

Perhaps a 250 GTO, SWB, or Lusso? In my opinion, there is no greater car sound than the unique whir of a Ferrari starter brining the engine spitting to life as the 4 Webers fill with gas, and the sound of the engine actually running is pure heaven. If you've never heard it, you're really missing out. It sounds very urgent, very high strung, and you immediately get the impression that it WANTS TO RUN.

Buying a GTO and an SWB is right up there at the top of my List of Things to do Before I Die.
