Auto to Manual Conversion - Possible?
I'm considering a track car - baiscially something already roughed up a bit so I don't feel bad about making it worse. Another 911 is probably too expensive.
If I found a sweet deal on a 944 automatic, how difficult would it be to swap it to a 5 speed? I imagine I would need the transmission and a pedal cluster, but what else? Would it be 1) possible or 2) worth it? Thanks Steve |
Uh, the whole bloody clutch setup maybe? That comes in handy with a manual transaxle.
The 944 has the transaxle in the back and the clutch in the front, so you'd need the manual transaxle to mount in the rear, and you'd need the full clutch aparatus to put in the front at the flywheel. I'm not sure if the torque tube is different between the two or not. The conversion has been done, I know that for certain, but it seems as though it would be a really big pain. Aaron |
Steve, it's been done, and I'm sure the real mechanics will chime in with details... But i think you'll probably have better luck finding a cheap manual.

Just off the top of my head..the things you'll need
-Clutch master cylinder -Clutch slave cylinder -Fluid Tap & Fluid Container -Pedal -Clutch&Flyweel Assembly & Tranny Basically, the parts would total more than some 944 manuals are worth. I might be selling mine soon, so keep an eye out, it wont be much either..maybe 2k american? maybe 2500?, dont know yet. But YOU will have to come up here and get it. |
steve, one thing you might do is buy a parts car for $500 and use that to do the swap.

I didn't realize it was that involved. Thanks for the info!
