Oil Cooler Change
My dad just bought another 944 for my brother but before he gets it the oil cooler needs some attention. Basically at the moment we have a nice milkshake in the coolant tank which leads us to the fact that the oil cooler has a fault (also backed up by our mechanic). Now instead of replacing the oil cooler with a new one or fixing the current one (changing the rings, etc) we were looking at cooling the oil by an alternate method.
Basically, we were looking at putting an air cooled oil cooler on the car, which we have read up on in past posts, however we are still left with a few questions not answered. Firstly i should ask if anyone has made this conversion on a 944 and how easy/successful was it? Secondly, can the current oil cooler be bipassed easily by connecting the water pipes straight through then putting blanks over the oil cooler. Thirdly, where would be an appropriate point on the block to tap into for the oil line to the new air cooler? Lastly, are there any sensors apart of the oil cooler which would have to be repositioned, etc?? Any information on this matter would be much appreciated. Regards

I've never heard of anyone using an external oil cooler to take the place of the internal one altogether. I suppose in theory it could be done, but why go through the trouble?? Simply set aside a few hours for the seals and the problem will be over. You'll save time, money, and a LOT of swearing.

It should be a straight swap with the Turbo external. In my case when I had both my 86's apart the housings could easily be interchanged.
You have a bit of work involved in this. To be honest the NA seals are not that bad to replace and should last you quite a while. I am not sure if its worth the effort for a street NA.

I use a front mount but you can convert to a 951 style cooler. If you are looking for front mount then BAT inc. has the setup. If you are looking for a 951 cooler post in the classfieds either here or at Rennlist, a number of us have dumped the small factory cooler.
