looking at a 944 (history attached)
I paid a little extra for my original 944 which was rear ended and writen off late in the summer. The car had all new belts, seals and clutch adn was in excellent condition. In not a mechanic, so I would rather pay a little more and drive rather than spin wrenches. I change plugs, filter, wheels, socks ... the basic stuff. The intention is Solo2 and some DE events so this car sounds ideal.
Here is the massive listing of the car. The coolant tank and head work is a concern, or is it?? The car is approx 5 1/2 hours away so I would get a PPI done before I drive out. I've included full info on the car below, but let me fill in a few blanks and answer your questions specifically. The work that was done recently was all preventative work, and also to fix some common 944 failures that I'm sure you are aware of already. The car is in great shape for an 18 year old 944 and I'm only selling it reluctantly to finance the purchase of a newer car for PCA DE. Originally we were going to keep the 944 for my wife to drive, but a new baby at home means that we can really only afford one "fun" car in the family. Keep in mind that this car is almost 18 years old, and I can't guarantee that problems won't arise in the future, but I can tell you that there is nothing beyond what I have mentioned that is wrong or about to go wrong. She has been extremely well maintained and cared for most of her life and looks almost perfect from 5 feet away, but up close you will see some stone chips on the front nose panel and spoiler, stone chips on the mirrors, and on the lower side skirts, and the odd light scratch here and there. Overall considering its original paint, the car looks pretty darn nice. When the Turbo spoiler was painted and attached, I also had the lower rear part of the right fender (just ahead of the bumper) repainted due to some scratches and scuffs courtesy of a careless person backing up a small utility trailer and the previous owner. The interior is in very good shape with no tears on the seats (scuffing of divers seat as mentioned) and no dash cracks or broken plastic trim. The hatch and floor carpeting does have some fading and a few stains, but nothing really obvious. Questions: Clutch - I mentioned that it has the typical high pedal feel to it. It is the original unit in the car, but it still is functioning perfectly with absolutely no slippage and no imminent signs of failure. I would guess though that when another person starts to drive the car regularly, the wear on the clutch may accelerate so you should probably factor in this work over the next few years (approx $350.00 in parts and 8-9 hours of shop labor). Its not a hard job, just takes lots of time and patience to things to take apart Air conditioner - I had the system recharged a few years after I bought the car and it worked fine for about a year or so but it obviously had a slow leak as the previous owner had to do the same. Since A/C was not a big issue for me, and the leak was not obvious, I did not bother spending the money to diagnose the issue and fix the leak. I would assume that the system needs a full diagnostic and perhaps some repairs to put it back into like new condition. A recharge would likely only buy you a temporary solution as it did for me VIN - See below How many owners - There have been three effective/driving owners but five are listed on the car documents from MOT. Let me explain as I traced this when I bought the car... The original car was delivered to a dealer in Saskatchewan (believe it or not!). It was then licensed by the dealer but not driven, the car was then transferred to another dealer and the plates were also transferred. If the car was driven by these two "owners" it was only a few hundred kilometers. The car was then sold as a new car to a gentleman named Stephen Polowin (he is the first owner listed in the Porsche new car paperwork provided with the car). He drove the car for approximately 35000km and then moved to Ottawa when the car changed hands at the local Porsche dealer and was sold to a lady friend of mine here in Ottawa (Gerri Powell). I have known the car since this time. She put approximately 30000km on the car in the time she owned it. I finally convinced her to sell me the car in 1997 (she upgrade to a new 993), and I have owned it ever since. All of the work on the car up to my ownership was done by Official Porsche dealers. Since I have owned it, the local Porsche dealer and the local independent Porsche specialist have been the ones to do any major work with minor work being done by me. ------------------------------------------------------ 1986 Porsche 944 Silver/Blue Metallic Tan (Linen) Interior VIN# WPOAA0949GN453456 132000KM 5 spd Most available options for 944 (and a few not so common) including: Power Windows Power door locks Electric mirrors Headlight washers Rear wiper Power brakes and steering Block heater Factory Alarm system Sunroof (removable) Sunroof storage bag Leather seats 15" Phone dial wheels Michelin XGT V4 tires (215/60/15) - 80% tread left Recent work done using only new Porsche original parts (work done within last 5000km): Metal Master PBR Brake Pads ATE Super Brake Fluid Turbo style motor mounts Clutch master cylinder Timing & balance shaft belts Water pump (with new style updated belt guide) Thermostat Rollers and tensioners Head Gasket New valve seats/guides and valve job with head rebuild Coolant overflow tank Electric Fan switches Oil cooler seals New 3M clear paint protectors at all 4 corners New turn signal/highbeam control stalks Modifications/Enhancements (all original parts with car): 944 Turbo underbody rear spoiler (color keyed) Rear "Porsche" reflector panel with lighted license plate frame FOHA Front lower spoiler lip * Autothority DME chip Autothority throttle Cam Magnecore 8mm ignition wires K&N Air Filter Bursch Header system (ceramic coated) Bursch High Flow catalytic convertor (emissions legal) Bursch catalytic converter test pipe (ceramic coated - not installed) * Brey Krause Stainless Steel Strut Bar * Brey Krause 4 point Stainless Steel Harness Bar * Brey Krause Stainless Steel Fire Extinguisher seat bracket * Halon Fire Extinguisher * Leaf CamLock Snap in 6 Point Harnesess (driver & passenger) 930 Turbo S Leather steering wheel Kenwood AM/FM CD Player with Sony and Pioneer speakers in stock locations Fisher C-Box console CD holder 944 Turbo Sway bars (Frt & Rear) BBS three piece 16" alloy wheels (Black center) New Yokohama AVS Sport Tires (F-225/50/16 & R-245/45/16) (appprox 4000km only) Issues: Stone Chips on front end, mirrors, and lower side skirts in front of rear fenders (Original paint) Some pitting of windshield due to normal wear and tear (no cracks or major issues) AC needs servicing/recharging Scuffing/discoloration of leather on drivers side bolster and lower seat cushion (no tears) Hatch creaks/rattles a bit when cold, but hatch glass is not unglued/separated from frame) Slight resonance in exhaust when cold due to header design (system can be put back to stock) Oil pan gasket has a very small leak (drop approx size of a loonie over 4 days sitting idle BBS wheels need to be rebalanced to be perfect at speed Comments: Never Winter Driven Clutch is original unit but still working well.
