Begging for Bolts

Hi Guys -

My search for bellhousing bolts is going poorly - do any of you have bolts from a parts doner car (84 944 NA)?

Thanks.

if you know the size/threads you can go to a bolt store and buy some nice bolts.

That is a very nice gesture. A few rennlist exiles lurk here.

Welcome to the dark side.

Thanks Mike. I will e-mail you.

FYI - the hardware store response - I wish it would have been that easy, but apparently Porsche uses a 1.5 mm thread pitch for their 12 mm bolts. Easily obtainable bolts (i.e. Hardware Stores) don't have that thread pitch in stock. A machinest friend of mine attempted to get some for me from his factory, as he has a large stockpile of metric bolts for the equipment they have at the plant (of foreign make), but he found that 1.5 mm pitch is only commonly used for up to 10 mm diameter. A 1.5 pitch 12 mm was a special order (at $10 per bolt, minimum 10 bolts per order). That meant I'd be spending $200 for (2) 12 mm x 50 mm and (2) 12 mm x 95 mm bolts.

So not only will I gladly pay Mike shipping, I will throw in some extra for a six-pack of the beverage of his choice.

Hey Todd,

it all started with Tom R. and his ridiculous nonsense. i put a thing in my sig about banning him, and when he took me off ignore he saw it and immediately whined to 944pete. i said i wasn't removing it till he changed and apologized, and he took it to john D. john, in what could have been one of the most douche-baggy moves i've ever seen decided just to erase both our sigs, rather than to review the situation and tell tom to behave. I came across a recent post of Toms and reported it, and john banned ME! i didn't know john was on vacation, and if i did i wouldn't have done that, i would have just talked to pete. in any event, john was VERY rude in his emails, and if he expects me to apologize for anything, that'll be a long time coming. anyway, i hope that pelican is as cool as rennlist was when i first got there!

back on topic here, i picked up the bolts last night, but i need some pictures of them to make sure i have the right ones. 50 mm and 95 mm i have, but they are shouldered.... are those the bellhousing bolts? i have two of each, ready to roll!

Hi Mike -

I'm at work (fast connection versus the snail dial-up I have at home) so I can't jog out to the garage and photograph them, but I will as soon as I get home and will e-mail them to you tomorrow. I "think" they are shouldered, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Mike - Yes, they are indeed shouldered. I have posted a photograph of each type.

PLEASE NOTE: I have no idea why someone took a grinder to the 50 mm bolt, but the necked down portion should be threaded. This damage is the reason I need to replace the existing bolts.

Thanks, Bob.

P.S. Here is why I took the bell housing off in the first place - stuck and worn out speed and reference sensors had to be replaced with these new ones.

And, for everybody, here is an update on the status of the garage I built. I start insulating the ceiling next month so that I don't lose all my heat this winter. The clutter is slowly disappearing.

Mike - Thanks a bunch! I'll be awaiting anxiously and will be sure to reimburse you for the shipping costs (and the promised beverges!).

Speedracing - This lift (about $3200, with accessories) was manufactured by Eagle Equipment (www.eagleequip.com) and is the same type used on "Horsepower TV". Other firms make similar lifts. Since the ceiling height is 10'6" in the garage, I'm able to fully extend the lift with the car on it. Since I'm 6'3", I have to duck slightly when going under the ramps, but under the car I can stand straight without banging my head on anything. It sure beats crawling around on the ground!!!
