Ever wonder what happens when you go over a tires speed rating?

this didnt happen on the p-car but it could if you get el-cheap-o tires. and the tire still holds air, i stopped before it poped.

Brand and type: Multi-mile Talon 2000 + 130mph =

Looks like overinflation or a dry tire.

Moneyguy1 11-05-2004 03:03 PM

Yeah..A case of "dry rot" and over inflated. No way on even a cheap fresh tire could 35psi do that, especially on a radial...

Harpman2 11-05-2004 03:56 PM

I think he's saying excessive (but fun) speed caused the tire to fail, not too much PSI. Centrifugal force, or the tire hitting the road too hard could maybe do that, couldn't it?

scheistermeiste 11-05-2004 05:10 PM

the tires are checked every 2 days and they were at the right PSI. its just these tires werent meant to go through what i put them through on a daily basis. main reason ive been so hard on them is i wanted to have fun with them while i could use them, i have a 5 lug swap sitting in my garage right now, so i thought id get my moneys worth of fun out of them.

Wow, any control issues after that happened at 130mph?

Also, it had to take forever to get up to 130 in a 924S. I think the published maximum speed of a 944 is 130. It would take me forever to get up that speed with how tall 5th gear is. I know the 924 is slightly more aerodynamic, but it can't make that much of a difference, can it?

scheistermeiste 11-07-2004 01:59 PM

it didnt happen in the 924S, it happened in a 2nd gen rx7 and no it doesnt take that long to get up to that speed in either car, more in the rx7 though.

i have personally reached over 140 in my 924S on a flat sufface in FL. ,y car isnt the regular 924, it has the 944 engine and drivetrain but its lighter and more aerodynamic.

edit: no there werent any control issues. i noticed the car wasnt right, it was vibrating more and immediately slowed down to 65mph when it started vibrating a LOT more. the only time i had felt it vibrate like that is when i had the same wheel fly off the car at 70mph from the retarded PO not putting the lug nuts on all the way when i was driving it home. after about a mile of it vibrating really bad i heard something hitting my fender and pulled over to a stop.

Had similar thing happen with Firestone Dayton- really El-Cheapo tyres do not pay off. My problem was not speed but poor tyre manufacture where rubber separated from casings on 3 of these tyres at different times. Thought it was shocks or allignment on my Opel and had these checked, but have had no problems since with Brigestone.

yeah i remember firestone having the problem of the tread separating. the first thing my cousin asked when i told him what happened was if it was a firestone tire.

I went over 130 in mine last night (fun)scary. I was running with and Acura RSX-S and a BMW 328is and kept with both of them. It is amazing what the 944 feels like a 130+ not overly responsive and not shaky at all. I love it.

scheistermeiste 11-08-2004 02:42 PM

i acctually like mine going faster because between 60-80 it has a bad vibration, but the faster i go the smoother it gets

Also, how did you get 130mph in an S4?:p

scheistermeiste 11-08-2004 05:24 PM

well it was 130mph on a few turns, and hod i do it in an S4? down hill baby!
