Daily Driver?

right now my 944 is my daily driver. Winter is coming.. considering dropping about a thousand for a beater car, though i'd much rather put it toward shocks n struts... I'm livin in connecticut, winter isnt *brutal* but it sure does snow. Mostly city driving for me, <5 mile commute to work. My first RWD car.. What should I expect driving through the winter? How many of us drive year round rain, sleet, hail, snow?

Year round... never had problems. We don't get a ton of snow, but I've never gotten stuck or gotten real squirly.

I have a box of snow chains that came with the car, but There's no way I'd put those on. yikes!

I am not sure. I never drove one with out it. All my other cars have been front wheel drive. The 944 handles quite well in the snow so far.

I'm about to go through my fourth winter with my 944 with no snow tires. All the winters have been in Indiana (where I went to school). There have definitely been some interesting days (and nights), but I've only gotten stuck once (at the worst possible time) . You just need to be careful, and not drive when it gets real bad out.

This winter I'll be somewhere in the West with the car. I'm driving on Friday and Saturday from Minneapolis to Salt Lake City for a new job. I don't plan on taking on any snowy mountain passes with the car.

Driving a 944 all winter can be done, just be careful and be prepared.

I drive my 951 all year round, never had a problem, then again it
hardly drops below freezing, and there has only been 1 snow flurry
in 35 years.
lovely 80o f days at the moment and getting hotter.
safe driving,
Russell

I've been driving my '44 every day since I got it, the only days I haven't driven it are when it's in the shop or i'm out of town. Of course, it hasn't snowed a single day since I got it but it handles fine in the rain so I don't anticipate any problems if it does snow this year (I live just outside of DC)

thing i like about driving my beater olds, during winter, is that i get to park next to mercs/cadillacs/bmw etc, and watch the look of absolute terror, as i prepare to throw open my door! actually, i find here in windsor area, it seems to be maniacal mini-van drivers who are the worst offenders, parking so close to your vehicle, that you invariably take a door hit, as they get out!

I drive my 951 all the time..with exception to snow and ice. But we only get about 2 weeks per year of snow and ice. Plus I work from home....

The BMW on the other hand, sees snow, ice, everything

mine will be getting snow tires this year as i am expecting a big mess. Last winter was horrible too, but I drove the new work van around and it has all season michelins....drove like a champ.

Im already trying to save up some $ to buy a car cover so the ice doesnt break my door handles and other expensive things like the glass. I already broke the passengerside one so if I break the driverside one, im screwed. Have to crawl in thru the hatch hehe.

Last year the old work van stayed at my house, and it sleeted the first part of the night, got warm for a few hours then early morning temps dropped below 0. It was really weird for those kind of events, but as it froze the sleet coming down just piled on the windshield...eventually turning it into a complete iceblock. I went to open the van the next morning and i get inside and the windshield is spiderwebbed like no tomorrow. Hence the reason why we had a new work van after that.

So all of you in the winter states, be careful and try to cover your car if it stays outside. It going to be a pain in the butt for me to cover it and uncover it every night and morning, but I can deal with it...

I did drive mine in the snow, They arent much differnt then a front wheel drive car. Just dont try to slmap on the gas or go up steep hils. Also here in CT they sand the HELL out of the roads and it chips the hell out of your car. I went and got a older 4wd toyota pickup that was a tank for the winter I loved it. Now I have my p-car for summer days and my new to me 2000 Toyota TAcoma 4wd V6.

Yeah, it's not necessarily how well YOU drive in the snow that matters... how about the guy in the '72 Buick without snow tires?
