electrical gremlin!

so...

i am still having an electrical issue with my clock and dome light. the fuse for these things burns up as soon as i stick the key into the ignition. without the key in the ignition, the light works and the clock. any ideas? i've COMPLETELY disconnected the radio and the amp. for the life of me, i cannot find the problem.

sounds like the wire is grounding out on the frame. You probably need to run a new wire from the fuse to the clock or just check it and find out where is it grounding out. and see if you can put something over it.

it only burns the fuse when the key is in the ignition. new fuse, no key, everything works. key in ignition, fuse pops.

The it's not the clock - the clock is always powered. It can be the radio or the oil pressure gauge or auto antaenna. Start disconnecting things connected to that fuse one at a time.

it doesn't have an auto antenna. however, it may have had one in the past. i'll have to look for the power to that.

oil pressure guage works.

radio has been completely disconnected (wasn't working anyway).

what else comes on when the key is inserted?

Aren't the cigarette lighter and glove box light on the same circuit as the clock and dome light? When I swapped out "Porsche" sized cigarette lighter socket for a standard one, I accidentally shorted the cigarrete lighter and the clock, dome light, and glove box light did not work until I replaced the fuse.

Check Dome Light switch/Plunger in door jams. Gently pull through the opening and check for damaged plunger/shorted wiring.

found the culprit. there was this mysterious green box behind the fuse panel and relay board, stuffed behind that mass of wires. it didn't look like it belonged there. i can't tell you how many hours i've spent under there with a flashlight, looking at wires, jiggling things, etc., and never had i noticed this box. it looked like a small tool box or something. so i pulled it out. it was connected to a plug. i disconnected the plug. then, i read the label. it is some sort of alarm. i thought the alarm sticker on my window was a joke. anyway, the green box was the culprit. also, wally the cat makes his first appearance on the board and so do i.
