why does there need to be a temp sensor inside? What is it used for?

Hey Makenzie71, check the ambient air temp sensor/fan. The small grill on the dash leads by a small hose to a fan with a temp sensor on it. Tucked under the lower left rear corner of the glovebox. The sensor reads the interior temp for the climate control system. My 87 44 had the hot and cold flashes. Found that sendor had a large "dust bunny" residing over it. Removed it and things got more normal with the temp control.

Also check the sensor exhaust port in the glove box to make sure it is not obstructed.
