engine questions 1987 944s Hello new to board and stupid, just bought a 1987 944s off a mechanics lean guy blew motor had new one installed and could not pay the bill , I got the old motor as part of the deal car has 35 K on body and 18K on new motor. My question is this I noticed on back of old motor near where the trans bolts on the engine numbers for the model of engine , I then looked at new motor in same spot and found these leters " DOT-R " but no model numbers whats up with this. Thanks chris Promise tons more questions to come |

The DOT-R tag is used instead of the vin code (they started tagging each of the body panels, doors, engine and transaxle in 1987) when a new engine is installed (a new engine as opposed to a used or rebuilt engine). You should still have the engine code and engine serial number on a boss by the exhaust manifold (might be hidden under a coating of grime). gb |

New (and only new, not rebuilt) Porsche replacement crankcases do not have serial numbers. Check the history, you may find the crankcase was either suplied by an official Porsche dealer or the repair was done at one. |
