A lot of disc brakes squeal, and it doesnt' help that most of the pads sold for a 944 are metallic. Here's what I do whenever I have a car with brakes that appear to be in good condition but still squeal:

first, remove the pads and calipers. Clean up *all* moving surfaces on the calipers and carriers with a wire brush and then coat lightly with anti-sieze paste. Then take the pads and knock the corners off with a flat file, esp. the leading edge. just a little bitty chamfer is enough. Then clean the back side of the pad and apply a little more anti-seize there, or else some of that brake anti-squeal goo. I use anti-seize just cause I always have it for other jobs and that way I only buy one bottle of stuff Reassemble.

I just did this to the front brakes on my 944 yesterday (while trying to stop a different noise that happened only intermittantly, I didn't fix that noise... see "help me - rear end noise" thread for details) and they do not squeal at all now even though the pads look like chunks of sintered iron (Metal Masters? dunno, were installed before I got the car) still a little squeal from the rears but oh well, it's 200% better. It used to sound like a frightened little girl when doing a light stop, now it's much less embarassing. I should have done it a long time ago.

Since you've got the anti-seize paste out, it would be a good idea to put a dab on each stud, and a thin coat on the wheel where it touches the hub (don't forget the center bore) to forestall any corrosion problems in the future. (can you tell that anti-seize is one of my top three favorite automotive chemicals? My other two are Kroil and Berkebile 2+2 carb cleaner.)

good luck,

nate

oh yeah it could be the pads wearing down too. Some pads have a "squeaker" on them that makes a racket when the pads are almost down to the rivets. But I thought all 944s had the brake pad wear sensors, so I didn't think of that possibility. (the ones on my car have the sensors, and no "squeaker")
