oil pump sleeve

hey forum!
I was wondering if I could get some input on a judgment call here. I'm doing a bunch of neglected maint including resealing the front end of my 944 engine. I pulled the sleeve of my oil pump and have noticed a wear line but a noticable groove is not evident. I VERY VERY slight change in the surface can be felt when rubbed with my fingernail. I have read in the past posts that if this is grooved, it'll ruin the new seal in a short time. Normally I would just say "better safe than sorry" and replace it but I'm kinda pressed for time and it'll be at least a week for a replacement according to my local dealership. There was oil all over the place in the belt covers but my balancing shaft seal were leaking like mad so the oil pump seal may not have been leaking....it didn't look like it was. It just seemed like the oil had run down from above.

So here's the million dollar question.... How worn is too worn?

Has anyone reused one of these with slight wear and been successful?

Thanks for your help!!!

PS Having problems uploading photos, will post them later on tonight.

Polish it with very fine emery paper (twist it while holding the paper on it) As long as you get it smooth with no ROUGH edges you we probably be OK. Give it a try????????

Thanks Tab. I will try this tomorrow. Have you successfully revived one this way before?

Depending on how you install the seal you can have it ride a slightly different path.

I dont recall it being that expensive........so if you can replace it you may as well.

I'd reccomend replacing it.

You can probably salvage it, or even use it as-is, but since the engine is apart, replacing it is a much better idea.

If you do decide to try and reuse it, make sure it doesn't leak after putting it back together. The proper sealing of this interface is critical to the correct functioning of the oil pump. A leak here can suck air into the oil pump, and foam the oil.
