Goodbye all. My engine is *!@#!
Hi all,
I think my engine has had it, and it's going to be too costly to repair. I am getting a knocking sound and I beleive it to be the big end. I have thickened up the oil to quieten it but I dread the car hasn't got long. The camshaft has also worn on No 1 cam. I don't think the poor thing is worth the repair costs. It's sad because it has been such fun to drive and I'm now thinking of getting a replacement car. I will keep you all informed of the outcome and convey my thanks and best wishes to you all for all the help in previous posts. 924 going cheap anyone? Regards Misty |
sorry to hear that...why dont you pick up a 944?
|
Sorry to hear that Misty, thats sucks! But you are right it would probably cost more to repair than it is worth. If you really like the car that much then fix it. Im sure many of us here have dumped plenty of $$$ into a car that wasnt worth a fraction of what we spend on it.
|
It ain't about the money with these cars. C'mon. Just park it and fix it when you can.

I guess it all depends on how sentimentally attached you are to the car. A few years ago, I re-arranged my front end after it hydroplaned in a rainstorm. Certain that the insurance company would total it, I did everything myself out of pocket to the tune of about $3K (which is what the car is worth roughly). But I'm a mental who has a hard time letting things like my car go. :)
Heck, why not just get another one? It will be about the same price as an engine rebuild, and you might even find a really nice example. For what its worth, I once had a minivan that had almost NO oil pressure and you could hear the bearings squeak horribly. Put Mobil 1 20-50 synthetic in it and it lasted over five years like that.................. |
Isn't a 924 motor basically an Audi motor? If you knew which models to look for couldn't you get a motor out of a wreck and just install that?

Find a used 944 enigne and do a swap to make it a 924S
|
It's a 924, so paying someone and spending huge sums (and it would be) to install a 944 motor makes no financial sense. Look out for another good 924 (less than 1500 UK pounds) if you like them and keep the other one for parts. Or buy a 924S or 944, prices don't look too bad in the UK at the moment. Check used car dealers and "911 and Porsche World" magazine.

Misty,
Try Lodge motorsports, they can supply guaranteed 924 engines for about £350: http://www.lodgesports.gbr.cc Cheers, Tim. |
Panzer 909: "Put Mobil 1 20-50 synthetic in it and it lasted over five years like that.................." is that a thicker oil? I have thickened the oil with some other stuff so I guess that would do the same thing?
Yep, It is sentimental to me but sometimes I think "hey, I'm spending tooooo much money to keep it running. I have to decide when enough is enough. I could get a relacement engine but then something else could go wrong six months down the line. She has been a fun to drive and have spent many days fiddling. I might get another make of car (haven't decided yet) and keep the 924, or then again I might sell it and save up for a 944? Cheers all Misty |
