Question Use plastic washer on oil cooler?

I have an 1985.5 944 NA. Should I use the plastic washer between the cooling element and housing as described in Clark's Garage? What is the purpose of this washer? How much does the element have to be "off" to make the o-rings start leaking oil?

Clarks Garage just had a thread on this titled "shimming the oil cooler housing.

If I do not have the modified housing it appears as if I do not use the shims/plastic washer. Is this correct? Should I still try to achieve the clearance mentioned in the article?

If you don't have the "updated" housing you will not use the white plastic washer. You must still use the metal shims IF and AS required to make the clearance as mentioned.

Thank you Granite 944. Hopefully the third time I do the job will be it. My hands don't have much skin left on them!

Just a quick question.....did you end up used the plastic washer on your non modified housing? I've got a 86 944na and I haven't measured the clearance yet and I'm wondering if I need to use that plastic washer.

I did NOT use the plastic washer. I DID use ONE metal shim in order to get the clearance as specified in Clark's Garage. The plastic washer is used to compensate for the different milling of the modified housing which is used in cars 87 and newer.
