The Haynes manual says 17lbs. Someone check this as I'm going to be installing mine in the next few days.

944S and 944S2 use the same valve cover and bolts. The Porsche recommended torque is 10NM (7lb ft).
Make sure you put a small amount of sealant on the new seal at each corner where the cam bearing housing attaches to the head. The old sealant is normally visible when removing the cover. Always replace the round seals in the valve cover for the spark plugs and also the seals for the fixing bolts. ..those parts may come with the gasket kit depending where you buy it.

Thank you! I'll be sealing the corners.......that's why i'm replacing the gasket, as the previous owner didn't seal them when he rebuilt the engine!

No, you don't need to retorque 944S/S2 cam cover bolts. What would be the point?

oops, not sure about the S
On my early the bolts were loose after the gasket seated...about 8 months....showed up as a mysterious oil leak moving appearing near the oil cooler.

If the bolts on a 8V engine came loose then something wasn't right in the first place. If it was with a head gasket failure or similar then probably the head gasket face for the cam box was/is still warped or sealer was used on the gasket. The bolts do not come loose.

Don't know if you've taken the bolts out yet, if not you might wake them up a bit by tapping the hex socket gently with a hammer. Then go slow - those bolts will break on you during removal, and they're surprisingly pricey in addition to the pain of extraction. And I wouldn't reinstall without antisieze, but other opinions may differ on that. And it's 10Nm, 7ft lb, as Britwrench already said (as if you'd need further confirmation...).
Britwrench - what do you mean by "seals for the fixing bolts"? The grommets that go around the cover bolts?

Yes, those seals..they tend to get hard due to the heat, so now is the time to replace them. You will need 13 of the seals, 928 104 115 02.
And yes, the bolts do tend to break and you need to be careful.

Hmmm, yes, I probably should have replaced mine when I replaced my chain tensioner. Not leaking yet...
Incidentally, geoff_pdx, how many miles are on your chain tensioner / chain tensioner pads? If you haven't had a chance to search about that, you'll need to. That'll kill an "S" if it fails.
