Baffles in oil sump...

To halt oil starvation while cornering, I've read mentions of baffles and "trap doors" in oil sump to solve this cronic 944 problem.

Per an earlier post, my engine took a dive during a DE last Sunday. Any Tech articles on sump baffles ? I haven't tuned up anything so far. Now would be the time to do it.

I have a door/baffle in mine plus a pickup that is closer to the floor of the sump. Don't know how much it helps. What does help is keeping the rpm below 6K and the oil level topped off. I have always checked mine after each run. I've done about 55 DE events with mine in southern states. I also have a second oil cooler.

There must be something to the baffle and door business. I have another sports car that came from the factory with a door and baffle.

I have read the hole is drilled on the wrong side of #2. One of the Chevy engines was also done that way (I have read, the 454). It surfaced when the engines were used for dragracing and kept spinning bearings as they were run at a higher rpm than intended.

Since my post, I discovered this little tid-bit of info,
Thanks
Ted

"The 89 944 Turbo and S2 have an additional pan baffle to help avoid this problem. This part will fit other 944’s. The Oil Pan Baffle part number is 944.107.389.03 and costs approximately $65.97. This may not fix the problem entirely, but it may help."

Since I'm on the track cornering hard on Hoosiers at high rpm's my crank has been drilled, and trap doors have been added to the pan.

My local 944 racing guru has not had an engine fail with these mods, even in 24-hour enduros. He has not touched his engine in four years.

Hope mine lasts as long.
