clicking sound (What is it!!)

I own a 84 944, my question is this. If you are looking under the hood standing in front of the car in the upper left corner of the engine compartment there is a part that I have no idea what it does. It has a cable coming out of it(possibly going to the throttle). When I start my car it will occasionally make a clicking sound, somewhat loudly. Could someone please tell me what this is and what it does and why it makes this noise? Sorry no picture.
Thanks in advance for all your help!!

Sounds like cruise control to me, although I didn't think they had that on the 84 model.....

Just like Grant said, probably the cruise control, best thing: unplug the wiring and the noise will be gone.
