83 944 Drive Train "Whine"
Requesting assistance on diagnosing a whine in my drive train.
I just purchased the car and nothing was noted in the pre-purchase mechanics inspection and I did not notice the whine on the test drive. But now, there is a distinct whine coming from the rear axle/ diff/ trans area only at low rpm in 3 - 5 gear. Any ideas out there? Car has 75k original miles. |

torque tube bearings? did you check the transmission for fluid? Are the rear tires rubbing the wheel wells?

Sounds pretty normal actually if the whine is while you are on the gas at a constant speed. I think it spells trouble if you hear the whine when you let off the gas. I'd try the search function if you don't get a better reply, I think this has been covered before.

Change out the trans lube and put some good synthetic in it.

Thanks for the input
Thanks for the input from all.
Yes, it only whines while I'm on the gas at low rpm, hwy speed. When I let off the gas, the whine stops. Yes, I've checked the trans fluid, but plan to change it so I'll use synthetic. No, have not considered the torque tube bearings; I'll see how far I can look into that one. Appreciate it all, if there's more good info like that, please keep it coming! |

Change the tranny oil first. I'd think that the t tube bearings wouldn't be bad at 75k miles. Check the simple stuff first before stressing over major stuff.

I had exacty the same whine when i bought my 944 with 76000 miles three years ago. The car went into an Porsche dealership for the 12000 service and was diagnosed with play in the diferential bearings, I checked this and there was a tiny amount of play (within Porsche tolerance) in the right hand output shaft, where the cv joint attaches. This might be worth checking.
One swepco tranny oil change and 33000 miles later the noise is no worse and the play appears to be the same , so I wouldnt be overly concerned.
