has anybody installed a misfire system on a 944 turbo?
I am looking at upgrading to a 951S in the near future. The question I have is if anybody has installed a misfire system on a 944 turbo. The system is supose to activate at part throttle above 4K rpm. The system fires only 1 out of 4 spark plugs in a stagered order so raw fuel dumps in cylinders, travels out the exhaust valves and hits the hot turbo. When this happens the fuel ignites inside the turbo and spools the turbo like a jet engine. All this happens so you have instant boost as soon as you get back on the gas during up shifts or going around the corner.

Never heard of one. Though I can't imagine that it would be a good thing for a long lasting turbo.

I think it is ok as long as you dont have a ceramic turbo.
I think it is used mostly in racing but I have heard of "tuners" doing it to street cars such as Evo's and STI's any info on the 951 application would be great. Thanks Speedy:) |
If you have to run a cat, I would say this idea is a no-no.

We dont do emissions testing in the middle of nowhere so cat bypass is an option. Plus I have plenty of cats on this farm already. lol

And if you are lucky you will spray enough fuel to wash the cylinder walls..........
There are easier ways to keep that turbo spooled. As in sizing it correctly. |
Don't do it. Complete waste of time, money and your turbo. Misfiring systems are commonly used in rally racing. Though, it does in fact damage your turbo. In rally racing, they change out parts so often that a turbo's lifespan isn't that important. From what I understand, it cracks and destroys turbines. Completely useless for anything except rallying IMO.
Ae1969 is correct. You'd be much better off just properly sizing a turbo for your power goals. Are you just looking for more response? Any specific power goals? There are plenty of simple things you can do to drastically improve response over stock 951/951S setups, that don't decrease reliability. |
well i am thinking of upgrading to a 951S but dont want to loose the throttle response of an N/A. I know the misfire system can deliver that but was unsure of reliability

This system is a absolute common thing down here in Australia, not so sure everywhere else. I atleast know that hear it is reffered to as Anti-Lag. Heck there is even a car club named after it too. However i dont see it being used that much if at all on the more 'exotic' cars but it does seem to be a huge hit on the imports/ricer scene.
Ive done my own research on the idea, just outa curiosity and knowledge reasons, and even though it does sound like a good idea it must inflict some serious complications upon the car in the long run. If you really want an anti lag system.
Install nitrous. Now dont laugh.... A nitrous system set to trigger at full throttle and trip off at 5 psi boost will give a real kick in the pants down low. |
Thats what alot of drag guys do, nitrous is a big lag fixer, just like awilson said.

There was a guy at the local Nathans last summer (fast food place where all the car people hang out) who had imported an EVO 5. He would rev it up and it would come down and pop flames out the exhaust (it re-routes the blow off valve air right into the exhaust). EVO motors have anti lag plumbed into the factory cars (only the US spec models dont have them). I was trying to convince my friend to keep it on his EVO 7 motor that he swapped into a Galant, but he sold it for $700 :eek: .
I would stay away from it....fuel exploding in the manifold and banging against the turbine will shorten the life significantly... |
