Burnt Smell

I dismissed it the first time, but cuz it happened again I was hoping for some insight from those more knowledgeable..

On cold starts (weather has been 15 to 30 degrees F) I'll start the car in the morning and let it idle till it warms up, then turn heat on.. No prob..

BUT.. when I put her in drive, for about 5 - 10 secs I'll get a burnt smell coming through the vent. Then its gone, and doesnt happen again until the next cold start. No smoke or liquid or anything.. No coolant smell, doesnt smell like oil. Only other (unrelated?) symptom I'm noticing is that the power steering pump whines on start up for the first 20 secs or so (again, cold start idle) but settles down once she warms up.

Anyone know where to start looking for trouble?

Thanks.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Possibly your flywheel to drive shaft adaptor. Has a large rubber core. Could be growning because of the torque from kicking it into gear and that it's colder than heck.
