Wheel width question

I have a set of cookies (15x7) and a set of Fuchs (15x7 and 15x8) for my early 944. All of the wheels have 215/60-15 tires on them. I understand the 8" rear Fuchs were an option but what is the point (and what is the performance benefit) if you don't mount a wider tire?
Put another way, is there a performance benefit to putting my summer/DE tires on the Fuchs and year-round tires on the cookies?

I've always had good luck with 225 40's

Fuchs are slightly lighter for the trck, and much more durable.
