starting problem
 

question for you folks- my 83 944 failed to start last week... was getting power, lights, radio etc.. turn the key- nothing.. no turn over no nothing.. consenus among us laymen was the starter, got a refurbed borsch starter, installed- still nothing. i am at a loss.. any suggestions? we did a voltage check to the posts on the starter and confirmed that it was getting power- and the battery has a full charge as well... heard rumors that it may be the vehicles "Brain".. any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I had this problem with my car. I had loose wires going to the battery so I took them off and cleaned the corrosion off of them. Never had that problem again.

Check the battery connections try jiggling the wires and see if it starts then. That was my giveaway, that it started when I jiggled the wires to the battery terminals.

we tried that, besides, we were getting power to the accessories as well... did a check at the starter itself, and made sure the starter posts were getting power, check. good suggestion though!

I was gettting all power to accessories as well when I had that problem when I had that problem.

Change the ingition switch.

A proper testing procedure is important. You should put a test light on the small terminal on the starter and try to crank it. The 12 volt test light should illuminate. If not then there is a problem between there, the ignition switch and the switch and the battery. There is no fuse for this circuit.

In most cases where the rest of the electrical works and the car does not crank it's the ignition switch. I alway test the circuit.

There is a plug on the firewall that the cranking signal goes through. Pulling the plug apart and using a jumper from the positive side of the battery to the proper pin should crank the car. Do a search of this forum for the correct pin info. If the car cranks through the plug then the ignition switch is bad.
