S2 camshaft chain HELP

Hey guys, I am in the process of installing a new hydraulic camshaft tensioner and chain on a 1989 S2. The new chain, part number 944 105 501 01, seems to be too long. There is alot of slack once installed. Unfortunately, I do not have the old chain to compare. The new chain has 23 links. Does anyone know how many links the chain is supposed to have?
It doesnt seem like the tensioner can take up all the slack.
Can anyone help??!

23 links sounds right. The number of links between the markings on the cams is 7 outer links. The chain tensioner will take up the slack.

chain

Mike, this is a pic of a timing chain that i've bought to fit to my 944s2 cab when i have the belts checked - it's the same part number and has the following info printed on the wrapper - "Bilstein Steuerkette 458 42 gld. 944 105 501 01 Art-Nr. 09424".
I can only count 21 links though - hope the pic helps.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. The initial chain I received had 23 links, so I re-ordered, and recieved one with 21 links. Both were the same part #, same package, I guess it was a packaging errot! Phew!
Thanks!
Mike

The 968 uses a longer chain. I'm not sure how many links though. Probably the same manufacturer. Could have been a packaging mix-up.
