944 Clutch Job...
I'm looking at a 944 that needs a clutch (most likely), and while I'm not too worried about doing the work myself, all the write-ups I can find are for 951s...
am I correct in thinking that there's really no difference save not needing to remove the intake???

Hey there! Good to see another Nebraskan here on the bbs.
Take a look at this: http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/clutch-01.htm It should have all of the info you'll need... But you might want to pick up a Haynes manual while you're at it.

I'll get the haynes, but I've found it helpful to have a "what NOT to do" list handy...
this won't be my first clutch either... just my first p-car.

I hope you get it and love it. I'm moving to Lincoln in a few months, it'd be awesome to know some friendly 944 types in the area
I know there are some Boxster guys out there, but none of 'em that I've talked to like to wrench and play.

we've got a good group of guys that all have some good wrenching experience, and tend to get bloody dirty at least one weekend a month. the flavor of the moment seems to be german sports sedans...
E28 533i E34 535i E36 325is(x2) E39 528i Touring W124 300E and recently good riddance to a Jetta GLX... thats the tip of the iceberg really though... trio of M3s and an M5... list goes on. we're an ecclectic bunch, drop me a line sometime and I'll introduce you to the crew. dasmafia@alltel.net

das: Check the F/S link about this car, please....Trying to pass some more info to you. Also, I haven't had the opportunity to drive this car yet, since I'm doing such a quick turnaround on it, but the previous owner had this to say when I asked him about driving it from Chicago to New Hampshire: Yes I think it could be driven back. I don't have a lot of

It is nothing particularly difficult. Just lots of disassembly to access the clutch. The difficult parts for me were removing the speed/refrence sensors, and the rod in the bellhousing (2 steps that seem straightforward, but were real hangups for me). The job has lots of steps and can take quite a bit of time, make sure you have the space and time, there is lots of help available on this board (this is evidenced by the fact that I got my clutch done).

If you come through the Kearney area and need anything, there's a place called Precision Import that does 944s and pretty much anything foreign. He's been really into fixing up riceboy cars, unfortunately, but he's decent to work with.
If you get to the Lexington area, I'm about 7 miles off the interstate. If you are going to be in the area, shoot me an email and I can get my # to you in case you have problems along the way

Personally, after my last clutch job, I would prefer to yank the engine to replace a clutch rather than working from the rear up...
