Occasional Valve Tick On Startup

Every now and then I get a little valve train tap when I first start the engine. It immediately goes away as soon as the oil pressure gauge moves upward. Such noises never occur when the engine has been running.

I think oil is draining off of something in the valve gear. Is this a problem? It began doing this occasionally a little over 1.5 years ago. I used Mobil 1 15w-50 in the car and change oil every other track event meaning every other month as I do a track event every month.

Engine has 153K on it and has been used as a semi-daily driver and track vehicle since 1996. Belts are changed every year. It runs well. There are no metal chips or anything link that on the oil drain plug. There is, however, a small bit of paste sticking to it.
The amount of paste has decreased considerably since I added a second oil cooler.

Anyway, should I just continue along my merry way or repalce some parts?

Sounds like your lifters are bleeding down , not something to be overly concerned about. If it was constant ticking youd have a problem.
What does your o/p guage sit at normaly

Oil pressure gauge (assuming it is correct) reads 5 bars at above idle speed. When hot it reads 3.5 bars at idle but immediately jumps back to 5 when you tap the gas.

Thanks for input.

If its happening overnight you more than likely have a bad lifter.

Its a nuisance at this point. I would wait for the next servicing before digging in. (Preferrably next head gasket)

Yes, it takes a number of hours for it to happen and then it doesn't always happen.

Mine has been doing this for about the last 4+ years - I've never had a problem. Keep going about your business.

position of a cam lobe may effect whether it happens or not
