Hood scoops, decals, and turbo's.

Applied my new scoop decal tonight........ Now I'm not too sure if I like it..

Maybe I will peel it back off before it gets good and stuck!!!!!

Before pics.

And after pics.

What do you think? looks better with or without the decal?..

I like it better without the decal myself. But I generally like things better with as little ornamentation as possible.

Yeah, I think the decal makes the NACA duct 'too busy' just MHO though.

I'm usually leaning toward the modernism philosophies and would agree with AaronM with respect to ornamentation...

However, I'm making an exception in this case. I do like the way it brings continuity to the cars body. The elements of reflected light as color and shaded areas as black. When you stand back, your see any penetration of the vehicle's body is darkened. Your nose vents are dark. Your front grill presents the appearance of darkness. Your windows reveal the darkened interior. Your fender openings reveal the darkened wheel wells. Your decal makes the duct fall into suit with the rest of the car's body. It's an opening and it too is now dark.

I'd say the decal is appropriate.

Thumbs up IMHO!!!

It doesn't look bad, but it looks better without.

I thought a turbo intercooler went in front of the radiator? Or is the scoop to keep the battery cool?

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

The NACA duct, which is what is up for debate here, is used in conjunction with the vented nose panel to extract heat from the manifold and turbo side of the engine bay. It draws air in the nose and directs it across the manifold and out the duct. Very efficient system actuall.

Used on a 944 it cools the engine bay and of course for the asthetic appeal.

Oh and Wolf...I like it. But then again I like anything that strays from the norm.

No the NACA duct was to force air into the early 924 turbos intercooler which was under the hood at that location.

The hood scoop is actually a beter design as it is intended to function at the air speed these cars travel. The NACA scoop is for supersonic travel.

It's like cutting the obround holes in the front. These work great on the early 924 design but the air flow is blocked by sheet metal and plastic baffels in the later designs.

I guess you could call it Krauting out your ride.

I love it when 944 owners want to argue 924/931 stuff with me.

Show me a 931 with a top mount intercooler 'stock' and I'll show you a Carrera GT that has no NACA duct at all. The hood scoop found on the CGT was used to feed the IC. Ducts = vent and Scoops = feed.

931's do not have intercoolers and the duct was used to vent the engine bay... period!

If you want me to dig up the factory literature that states this I will, but you will have to pay me for my time.

This is a CGT and the set up that feeds the IC via hood scoop. Note: No NACA duct to be found.

Nah, I'm done.

He can do his own homework.

SoCal, brush up on the lineage of your car and then we can chat.

Now to return you to your regularly scheduled program...

I personal love the NACA ducted hood. I have an 87 951 that we repainted, and if I could have found a hood with a duct I would have put it on-I think it just looks good

This thread is renewing my temptation to see if I can mount a 931 hood on my 944... Or maybe just graft the NACA (how many of you know what NACA means and the story behind that style of vent is?) duct into the current 944 hood (would involve less re-wiring of things)...

EDIT: And no, the NACA duct is not an outlet for the air. The air exits at the cowl (a natural low-pressure area). The NACA duct provides an inlet for air and helps establish proper underhood airflow so that the 931's intake tract is cooled.
