Couple final belt and water pump questiosn
Hey guys, as a few of you may know I replaced my camshaft belt, balanceshaft belt, balance shaft seals, water pump, thermostat, and a few hoses last weekend. There are a couple final questions about some issues though.
1. When my car is running I have a whinning noise that increases intensity with engine speed (sounds like I have a blower). I have searched and seen multiple threads talking about the belts breaking in and whinning at first. I also seem to hear the same noise after I shut down the car for about 30 seconds, but at a much lower level and rate. My car is a N/A so it cant be the coolant circulating through the turbo or anything like that. It is also not the radiator fans. Any ideas? 2. What is the tension supposed to be on the kriket (the scale on mine is 20-75 lbs) for the drive belts (A/C alternator and power steering)?

Belt noise can be a tight belt, a bad pulley or roller, the back cover being loose and touching the belt.
The rollers are the smooth ones -- no teeth. One is slightly clear of the belt but does spin from the belt spaping it. A fellow driver was asking me the same question last year. Turned out to be the roller that just clears one of the belts. Could hear it spin down for almost a minute after he shut off his engine.
