Drivetrain Problem?

Dropping the car off at shop next week for an exhaust leak up by the manifold, though I'm wondering if thats the priority.

Accelleration is smooth, other than the rattle from the exhaust during low rpm..

Now... on deceleration, riiiight before i come to a complete stop, I'll get a "skidding choppy clunk" sound.. like somethings trying to catch, then finally does.. If it makes a difference, I notice it more on the slow, controlled stops, not really on quick stops.

Sounds like its origination from behind the center console area, or from below (auto) shifter..

likely culrpits?

Sound like the ruber disc plate, is going bad. This is what connects the drive shaft (torque tube) to the engine. I'm parting out a auto 944 so if you need parts let me know

That sounds like the clutch center is toast (nodding in agreement with Tab).

You'll need to do a clutch job soon. ($$$)

Whatever you do, I would not keep driving it until you get the clutch issue addressed. Yes, it is still *drivable*, but...........that is really the "limp home" mode. It is not meant to be continually driven in that manner. The extra play in the system will wreak havok with the forward bearings on the input shaft of your transmission. Prolonged driving with it in this condition will seriously eat into the life expectancy of your transmission (which is generally a short life anyway, at least in my experience....LOL!)

Best of luck!

Doh. I just noticed the all important "auto" mention. Please disregard my sage advice above. LOL

(goes to get a cup of coffee to jumpstart brain.................... ;) )

Automatics have rubber centers too. Infact they are three times as expensive to buy.

Slighty different procedure to get to them. There is a clip on the front of the drive shaft so the disk has to be unbolted from the flywheel before the tube, bell housing and engine are pulled apart.

Why is there a clip? There is also a set collar on the back side of the rubber disk. This is part of the design to keep the drive shaft and torque housing from moving into or out of the trans.
