Porsche Crest Trans question...

I've heard that an audi 5000 trans (manual) will work in a 944, does anyone know anything about this? Thanks for any info.

No, the 944 trans uses some VW/Audi parts inside the trans from different models but can't be used straight out of a 5000. Easy to tell as the part numbers are basically the same. VW/Audi built the trans anyway. Same with the 968 trans which is also an Audi product.

bitwrench have you actually seen the two trannies side by side? I've pictures of both and aside from the holes in the casting for the clutch parts to go through the 5000 tranny and the 944 tranny look almost identical and their gearing is pretty much identical as well.

Yes, they are very similar, the 944 uses some gear sets from the 200 Turbo and many internal parts are the same. The rear casing, ring and pinion and gear shift linkage is different. I've never bothered to actually check but the main case could be the same. Bearing in mind this was primarily taken from the 924 (designed by Porsche and VW) the obvious place to find already built components was Audi/VW.

From the research that I had done they looked practically identical (outside case wise) and the gear ratios were exactly the same. This was internet info tho', so i doubt that it is perfect.

thanks for the replies guys,

Stephen

I've noticed that the part number for the Quaife lsd is the same for 944's and the Audi 4kq's center diff (or something like that), it would be handy if good clutch type lsds could be harvested from dead Audi's, but I've heard that they're not close enough, -never anything definitive though.

944's use Quaife lsd part #40.309.170, same as:
Audi - Front, Coupe GT, 4000 Quattro, Quattro Coupe (016 / 093 trans)
&
Audi - Rear, A4 (B5) Quattro
I wish I could find out if any of these came stock with a 944 clutch type lsd...
