944 engine swap... help!

ok i know that this is an issue that has been argued to death, but i want to ask the question. i own a 1984 944 porsche. It has significant modifications to suspension, carbon fibre body parts(gt auto), roll cage and 18 in BBS racing rims. well last weekend i was taking it around the track, and the timing belt broke... so basically i need a new valve job and whatever else.

i originally thought about replacing the car with a 944 turbo, but then i realized that alot of my modifications would not transfer to that vehicle. ie I believe the turbo has a different bolt pattern for rims.

i guess what i want to ask is how would i go about swapping a engine and drivetrain out of a Turbo to my NA? seeing as how i need a new project to work on instead of driving her.

i only run this car for fun, i am not a professional. its just a hobby with the buddies. i have a 928 s4 for any autocross itch i can get. i just think this is a project i may enjoy undertaking.

i appreciate any serious advice, as i am tired of my 944 being passed.

The motor and tranny are straight forward bolt ins, they'll go in just like they came out. If you were to swap in the suspension you'd have to use an '86 turbo as a donor. The main problem you are going to run into is wiring. Hopefully you have the factory wiring schematics and know how to read wiring diagrams. The best thing you could do is probably get an '86 turbo donor car or front clip.

The bolt pattern is the same.

All five-lug Porsches are the same, from early 911s, 944s, late 911s and even Boxsters.

I was referring to the bigger brakes and upgraded hubs on the later cars.

"i guess what i want to ask is how would i go about swapping a engine and drivetrain out of a Turbo to my NA? seeing as how i need a new project to work on instead of driving her."

Get a totalled 951 from somewhere and transfer over the following:

- engine, this is the easy part, only 30-40 hours.
- clutch, bellhousing, torque-tube, tranny
- exhaust: headers, crossover, downpipe, cat & cat-back
- turbo, intercooler, pipes, etc.
- turbo cooling system
- turbo engine-harness
- turbo instruments harness
- '86 suspension will work with your existing mods & wheels
- turbo fuel system, pump, rail, injectors
