Red face feel free to laugh at me. Go ahead, i deserve it.

Nothing serious happened, just a little bit sucky.

On feb 5, I ordered all of the parts I need to do my water pump job, and I called Pelican first to make sure I was going to get everything I'd need, and to make sure that the water pump I had on the car now was the new style and that I could put in another new style without having problems. The friendly Pelican on the other end of the phone helped me out and I made my order online... I dunno why I didn't do it over the phone.

Anywho, first time I look at all of the parts was today when I actually started re-assemblying everything. Turns out, I ordered an old style pump. Checked my order, yup, sure enough, i must've checked the wrong box.

The sucky thing is... I didn't take a close enough look at the pumps when I made the switch. So, I get to the point where I'm putting the belt guard on there, and whoop, uh-oh... that's not right.

So I have two options, as I see it. Buy the old style idler and continue with the old style pump that's on it, or tear it apart again and buy another pump, this time the right one. It'll be good practice if I tear it apart again... It wouldn't hurt my feelings too much. I had a lot of fun these last couple of days. It's just like... the biggest *doh* i've had in awhile.

You know what, I know what the right thing to do is. I need to take it apart and do it right.

So, just to triple-check and make sure I don't eff it up again, THIS is the one I need, correct?

I think you are going the right way with the "do it right" approach.

You may be able to work out some sort of return for the old-style pump, might have to pay a higher than normal "restocking fee" depending on the condition of the parts, but I think they are quite reasonable at Pelican about this sort of thing.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure just about everyone here has had a similar sized "doh!" experience at one time or another, it's just we're probably not so straightforward as to post about it so candidly! (Look for posts that start with "I've got a friend who ordered the wrong style waterpump for his 944, and now he's in a real mess...")

Best of luck.

There are three styles of pumps; the original without the belt guard, the middle one with the guard and the later and rationlised one (fits all 2.5 8V engines, including Turbo) which has the guard and water outlet.
The early one still works fine, if you want the late one, then install it but it's not going to last any longer or be more efficient in relation to what the engine needs.

Make sure you use the correct idler pulley with the belt guard pump. The early one is smaller.

Just ordered the new pump, over the phone this time so I can't mess the order up... again

So.... I'll start disassembly tonight to get ready for it.

Does anyone have any use for an early style pump? I have this new one that I can't use and that Pelican doesn't want back. I guess it could sit on the shelf as a reminder to myself.
