help electrical demons

my ac was hanging on by the adjusting rod(p/o) so i replace it so i tried to charge it and when i turned it on the engine fell on its face and died. i jumped it off because it was like the battery was completely drained in a matter of seconds and it was fine until the cooling fans come on. i jumped it again and i tried to turn on the headlights and it did the same thing. where should i start??????

It sounds like an alternator problem. Get the car running, if you can, and check the voltage at the battery. The voltage should read 13.6v or higher if you are getting a charge. Also check to make sure all your grounds are good, and double check the alternator belt and the connections behind the alternator.

Make sure the battery terminals are clean, and the cables are connected tightly(won't twist if you try to twist them).

It really sounds like the alternator, and sense you just remounted the A/C compressor, make sure you the wires are in good condition behind the alternator.

Cindy:

How close to Richmond are you? My older sister lives in Richmond, and she and I have been "wrenching" on cars since I was about 10 (over 40 years!).

Although she does not have a Porsche, I can get her up to speed enough to help.
