Engine Rebuild Question

I am I the process of rebuilding my 1987 N/A engine and ran into a problem. The thrust bearing is tight on the SIDES and OK clearence for the oil journal. The crank has been ground .25 under for both the rod and main journels. Is this common, or is there a issue? I can barely turn it with my hands and now that the pistons are in, need to use a wrench. I has loosened up some. Should the machine shop have opened up the sides of the thrust bearing area on the crank when they ground it? Any help much appreciated.

Uhmm

Where you able to spin the crank with out the rods and pistons attached?

Most common mistake is to flip the rod caps. THat usually binds it up.

Thanks for the response - it is the thrust bearing for sure. The caps are on right. I think I solved this problem today by calling the machine shop but would still like to know if anybody else has run into this problem.
