Broken cars for sale
Whenever the topic of timing belts come up, we're reminded that cars with broken t-belts go for ~$500. Where are these cars, because I'd like to get ahold of a cheap body, hopefully one with a halfway decent transmisison.
If you have a 944 graveyard and know of an über-cheap 944 I can resurrect, let me know! I'm going to be looking for a project car in the next few months, since I'm thinking really hard about building an autox car.

wasnt there just a thread where 2.5L engines go for about $500? lets assume that a majority of us have invested a coupla thou in their car. obviously you've more spent on the car than its market value. one would be out more money by letting it go for $500 from t-belt damage than by buying a parted engine for $500, and swapping. unless the belt going is "the last straw", or a reason to trade up to a nice 951.

I should add... I'd prefer it to be an 83 or 84.

When my belt broke, the bill was a little over $2k, which is what I paid for the car. I can see why some people might take that as the last straw and just eat their loss and let the car go.

I bought my 924S for $350, with a broken t-belt. If it weren't for bad rings from sitting so long till I got all the work done, it would have been on the road for under $800, including the purchase. That was doing all the work, other than the valves, myself, of course. I got a good engine for $700, and spent another $700 to have it installed, as I don't have shop space at the moment.
I also swallowed the $150 core charge so I can have an engine to mod if I feel like it,or to use for parts if I need to.

IIRC (from Excellence) the sunroof equipped cars are actually stronger due to the extra frame work required for the sunroof. Not that I could see it making a real difference...
That's one ugly 944, FR. Sorry to hear about your real estate problems. Hope you get things straightened out.

Yes, they are stronger, but the non sunroof cars are lighter.

None of the Firehawk series cars and "race" cars where ordered with sunroofs. hmmmmm....
It's also a safety issue, no huge hole to "pop" open in a crash. Yeppers, lighter. Want to stiffen it, add a full roll cage/frame set-up. The guy is in my area and looking to build a race car. Hopefully it's what he's looking for. ![]() Last edited by Capri22racer; 06-02-2005 at 11:54 AM.. |

Capri, thanks for the PM, i got back to you.
I'll be out of town for most of June, but I'll try to catch the board when I can. I'm leaving tomorrow for WWDC in San Francisco, then I'm helping to teach a video production class, so my time will really be soaked up.

I think the broke cars fetch so much less because it speaks of neglect.
It takes a lot to make up for neglect if you know what you are doing. If you don't it takes $$$$ especially at the dealer.
