early car runs with late dme only?
This may have gotten lost in another post and am looking for some technical feedback; 83 944 automatics n\a runs for @ 5-30 secs and shuts off like you flipped a light switch(replaced dme relay). I installed a late model dme and afm and the car runs fine???? i took the orig dme and afm and installed it in another car and it runs fine???? put the orig back into the car with the running problem and it stalls??? Swapped back and forth a few times and the results are consistant. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE!?

Check the part number on the AFM, sounds like it might be a late one too. Did it ever run right with the early DME?

afm part number is correct and yes it did run right with the early dme. It seems like it started after I removed the dme to test a parts car motor. The motor did work well and the dme worked correctly. I first noticed the proble when after a few days I reinstalled the Dme into the orig car. (coincidence?)

Open the early DME and check the solder connections where the harness connector is soldered to the PC boards.
Cold or fractured solder joints are a know issue with these DMEs.

Does the car have factory alarm or central locking? I've read somwhere these can make DMEs do strange things when they're toyed with. That said, I'd cuddle up with the TV, the DME and a soldering tool for an evening.
