Guards red paint - where to find approx color?
I know I can get Guards Red at a Porsche dealership in touch-up size pen and by the 1/2 gallon, but what I;m looking for is an aerosol can so I can just paint the scuffed portion (after sanding, and priming of course) of the front air dam on my '44
Thanks, |
The only way to match that color would be to have a qualified paint shop blend it for you. There used to be a system to then make an aerosol but it used custom pieces and was expensive. I don't know if it's even available anymore. Maybe you should consider having a shop spray it after you prep it, that would yield the best result and might be the most cost effective route, good luck.

There is an auto paint store down the street from me that does custom color spray cans. I think they run about $30.

buy a gallon and airbrush it.
|
Any qualified auto paint store should be able to do it.
I had the local place mix me a can of the champange vinyl spray for the dashboard. It looks dead on. Great job. |

They will mix you a paint pen, spray can, and up to a 5 gallons of paint. Worked for me. |
Depending on the age of the paint, if it is original, it is getting closer to "Guards Pink". (MD is probably not as bad on red as AZ) The only way to get a real match is to take some removable part of the car to a professional paint shop and they can determine how to modify the color to give a better match. Some shops can match if you bring the car in.

exactly... moneyguy1 hit the nail on the head...
just take it to any paint place... they usually have a colour matching gun that, when pressed on the colour of your car, will give u the real paint code of what it is *now*.. kinda like the eye-dropper in adobe photoshop... that's your best bet... |
Great, thanks for the tip. I wanted to avoid going to a paint shop to get it done because it's so small a job, I'd hate to part with a couple of bills for 6" scrape along the very bottom edge of the air dam. $40 for a spray can to match is a much more paletable option :)
Thanks again |
Along the bottom of the air dam, the paint probably hasn't faded that much. The factory paint code should be very close. A little buffing to blend it, and you shouldn't be able to tell a difference.

I bought a couple cans of guards red paint from www.towerpaint.com for $15 each and pretty happy with the matching of the color. Seems like a pretty good quality paint.

Actually, believe it or not, PepBoys has Guards Red in a spray can now - and it's as close as it can be to the naked eye :)
