Cooling system cleaner
I found oil in the coolant in my 84 NA and have ordered the oil cooler seal kit from Pelican Parts. I've never done this job before, but from everything said here, it doesn't sound like it will be too bad of a job. In the factory shop manual, there is a procedure for flushing the cooling system to remove oil contamation. The instructions say to use a "cold cleaning agent" during flushing....does anyone know exactly what that is? Any recommendations? I know we have to be careful about what is used in the cooling system....I don't want to damage the hoses, water pump, or radiator.

There are several coolent system cleaners. All work. I prefere Dupont products. If you have caught your leak early you may get away with just one cleaning. The oil in the coolent will degrade all of the rubber hoses in the system. Check these carefully.
How is your timing belt?

I used the Prestone flush you get at Wal-Mart. Follow the directions carefully with any product. Following the flush and rinse, I had leaks at the hose connections and had to disconnect and clean. The worst drip leak came from the lower plastic to metal seal on the radiator. After hours of searching the boards for a fix the conclusion was NEVER to use a leak stop!!! I used the advise of one post and let the drip seal itself.
I also found a post that used dish soap to get rid of the brown oil in the hoses and system. John_AZ 1988 924S 52K to show 1987 924S 100K+ to go 1998 Cherokee to tow |

I would recomment that you do not need to use any flusher.
One of the indy guys has suggested this as, the chemicals that they use are pretty harsh and "could" mess up your rad and pipes. Even heard tell of salesmen talking people into putting this gunk into systems as they know in a month or so they will be back for a new radiator. I think the workshop manual gives a consise way to flush the system. As long as you do it the right way, you should not need any flush HTH Ade
