Thermostat alignment?

I haven't replaced a water pump on a 944 in 15yrs. I have been searching through the threads but I can not seem to find my answer. The question:

Isn't there a specific way the thermostat should be facing? I see an arrow on it but should it be pointing to 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock?

From what I remember this is important to the flow of the coolant.

Thanks

I haven't heard of that before, but clarks-garage mentions that the snap-ring holes should be positioned toward either the top or bottom so it's easier to replace later.
