No Throttle Response

1986 944- Starts & idles fine. Press on accelerator and no throttle response. Car does not die.The pedal goes to the floor with no response at first,but then the throttle goes in and out. drove to work fine this morning. It has had an erratic throttle for several weeks at idle but has driven out fine. Any suggestions.

Sounds like the throttle cable. Easy to check if it's still connected - look where I've circled in this pic:

Does it seem like a mechanical or electrical problem? If it is consistent, every time it's probobly mechanical, it's it's erratic and happens once in a while or when it's wet...or hot etc. it's probobly electrical. If it seems electrical I'd check out the throttle position switch, it can be inspected with an ohm meter, so it would be something you could test cheap and easily.

Throttle cable is fine and today it all of a sudden runs perfect. Maybe it is electrical! Thanks for the info guys.

have someone pressing the accelerator & watch the cable in the engine. There should be a wire tie in that small hole that keeps the cable from jumping out. Dont think that is your issue, but it could be a problem.

Yes to everything said here and while you are at the AFM, remove that big hose and check if you can move that little wing in there - but carefully. Axle ends can be jammed by dirt and hard to move. If so, no reaction from engine when pedal down- just idle. Remedy is eventually a couple of spray with WD-40. It will loosen up things and wing will move again and give right imformation to DME.

You may have a damaged air flow sensor. Even though the 944's injection system has an idle and WOT switch, if the vane in the air flow sensor is stuck, it'll only meter enough fuel for that amount of air.

Take off the big rubber boot from the back of the air flow sensor, try to move the vane inside with your finger. If it moves easily then your next culprit may be the throttle body or something else. If it binds during it's normal range of motion, you may need a new one.
