Help with spring tensoner differences?
I see two different part numbers for the spring tensioners in my Parts and Technical Reference Catalog (1999 edition). I need to replace the spring tensioner on a 1988 924S. I currently have a new one here that is part number 944.105.067.16.
Pet (Feb. 2004 edition), and above catalog says its suppose to be PN 944.105.067.14. It appears that the 1988 944S, 8 valves, use the spring tensioner with an extra cambelt idler roller mounted on it. The 924S does not use the extra roller. The 944S also shows using the .14 part number, but only in PET. I think I'm confused here. The Parts and Ref. Catalog shows that the 944S uses the .16 part number. My experience has been with the earlier, regular type tensioner. Question. Are these spring tensioners actually the same, with no other differences? Can we use this part number on the 924S? I'm suppose to help replace this tensioner tommorow morning on another members car, and this is the part we have right now. I just got this part in my hand, so I could see the part numbers. I can't see where there would be any real differences. But.......IS there? Thanks!

I don't even see the .16 part number in PET. One of the differences between the S and the S2 is the width of the tensioner roller. Otherwise they are the same. I think all have the provision for the extra idler roller mounting on the bottom of the tensioner but it does not have to be used.

The only place I've seen the .16 pn is in the parts and ref catalog, and on this part that I do have here. I'm under the impression that the wider roller 31.5mm is used on the S models, and the narrower, 26mm roller is used on the earlier, 8valve engines. The 924S that this tensioner is to be put in, has the 951 updated pump already in it now, so I'm kinda thinking that maybe the .16 part could be used in there since it comes with the wider roller, and I don't think there will be a pulley flange offset problem. I really won't know though, until I actually pull the old one back off the car, and compare belt alignment with the newer tensioner installed in there. Otherwise, I would think that the spring tension part of it itself should be the same. I am really believing that the part I have right now is really the 16 valve part replacement. It does have the 4V stamped on the front of the arm, and the wider roller. I was hoping to get a verification that this part would work in this car before I start going in there again. The extra roller thing, I really wasn't to concerned with, but I really hadn't any experience with that either.......yet!
Dumb question. The 944S and the 944S2 are both 16 valve engines......right? Otherwise, its just the normal 8 valve na. Thanks!
