Emissions...
While I was here trying to troubleshoot another problem, I figured I could bring this up as well.
We have a 1984 944. It has 45,000 miles on it. The last time we went for an inspection sticker for it (we live in MA) it failed emissions. The issue here is that it failed by a lot, and looking at previous emissions tests, it seems apparent that something has gone wrong. It failed on HC emissions and CO emissions. Not having the inspection papers in front of me, I will throw down the ballpark numbers. Last time it was inspected, the CO was something around 10-20 grams per mile or whatever it is. Now it is 110-120 grams per mile. The HC also made a huge jump. What would be the cause of this? We checked some easy things (air filter and visual checks of the system) and everything seems to be fine. The oxygen sensor we hooked a voltmeter up to and it is registering voltages varying around .25 volts. Not knowing what the values should be, I don't know that this is correct, but it is at least changing its voltage over time. Any ideas what would cause this jump in emissions of carbon monoxide and unburned gas with no changes done to the engine? |

i dont kno if this will help, but its worth a try.
porsche makes their cats "initiate" when the temperatures get high. my mechanic told me to drive the car around a lot before doin a check.. he said to get the engine pretty warm..this will jump the cat and u wont fail...but ur problem seems more drastic then normal...just thought i'd give my 2 cents good luck

The 2nd attempt at getting it to pass it was nice and hot, so that rules out that problem. Like you mentioned, this change seems more drastic then that.
