i'm finishing up on stripping/polishing my phonedials... what a pain in he a**.... airplane stripper got 90% of the paint off after 2 applications. The other 10% is what takes 90% of the time. Either a fine grit sandpaper, or a dremel/drill with the sanding attachment. If i had to do it all over again, I wouldn't. I would up the $ and pay to have then stripped with the glass bead power stripping thing. but then i wouldn't have had the opportunity for a wicked contact high from the airplane stripper in 90 degree weather.
i've tried mother's billet & ealge 1 cotton wadding polish, i like the eagle 1. try a search for fuch refinishing, you'll get alot of threads, some with pics i believe, to get you on your way.

If you want to polish the aluminum you need a dremel tool with a buffing pad. you need to get some jewlers rouge, start out with a brown bar and do the finish work with a green bar. you need to use one buffing pad for the green bar and one buffing pad for the brown, dont use one pad with two seperate compounds. you should be able to get the buffing wheels at home-depot or menards. I usually get my jewlers rouge bars from the local truck stop.

My advice is just to polish the rim and not the whole wheel. I started mine in sept 04 and I am just finishing the last one. If the wheel is good with no pitting reckon on 2 days solid (centres need more work as they don't have a smooth finish and it needs smoothing first. If the wheels are bad like mine with pitting may take up to 4 days or more (all mine did). Forget about a dremel you'll be there all month a power drill and varying cloth disks & rouges are needed.
Admitedly they look great when done but unless your retired or have a lot of time on your hands forget it! Heres my orig link way back with the kit I used. Polishing Fuchs

I was taught a simple method once u have stripped the lip from the clearcoat. Take 400 grit sandpaper and lube with WD-40 and use some elbow and sand along the lip. Obviouslu u have to sand along the lenght of the wheel for the best results. After sanding with WD-40 and 400 wipe with newspaper or paper towels. Repeat process with 1200 grit sandpaper along with WD-40 again. Wipe down with paper towles and check for imperfections. When satisfied makes sure wheel is dry and use Mothers Mag Polish. Now apply polish and wipw with newspaper and buff to a shine. You've got Bling, Bling, if performed correct.

Hmm to be honest I found you needed to use 600 or 800 grit between the 400 and 1200. Also Wet and dry paper with water works better 2 the wd-40 reduces friction to much and metal / scratches removed therefore increases time also waters cheaper but each to his own I suppose ;-)
