Transaxle Q

Are the fill and drain plugs tappered? Cj and I are changing the gear oil on his car we ran into a problem with the drain plug not going in. I was thinking of picking up a tap and die set to clean up the threads but the plugs look to be tappered. This maybe because of the first thread that is slightly flated. Any input would be great thanks.

The plugs are slightly tapered.

The threads in the transaxle are not.
